Bonaire

Fort Oranje, Kralendijk

Fort Oranje in Kralendijk, a small bastion that was built by the Dutch in 1639 and served as the Governor's mansion until 1837. The defensive cannons were actually scavenged from a British warship that grounded on the south shore in the early 1800s. Although the British gained control of Bonaire several times during the Napoleonic Wars, the island (and thus the fort) never saw any action.
